Washington’s 2016 Year-End Spending Spree

October 20, 2016 Curtis Kalin

As federal fiscal years wind down, a frustrating ritual takes place throughout departments and agencies:  a spending surge on frivolous items in order to avoid budget cuts in the next fiscal year.  The final month of fiscal year 2016 is no exception.

A Cure for Electoral Depression: Focus Final 2016 Presidential Debate on Policy Solutions

October 19, 2016 Curtis Kalin

In a recent poll, a sizable portion of young Americans said they would rather vote for a giant meteor to strike the Earth over either of the two presidential candidates.  There might be a reason for such a dark and depressing result.  The first two presidential debates have utterly failed to discuss important issues facing the nation with any depth, choosing to focus on shenanigans instead of substance.

Medicare Making Improper Payments to Prisoners

October 13, 2016 Leslie Paige

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) recently exposed vulnerabilities that end up costing taxpayers hundreds of billions in wasteful spending due to erroneous and sloppy billing, and outright fraud. Clinton/Trump Round 2: Taxpayers Deserve a Policy Debate

October 7, 2016 Curtis Kalin

Before the first Presidential debate on September 27, 2016, CAGW proposed policy questions that would enlighten taxpayers as to where each candidate stands on critical government waste issues facing the nation. Congress Passes Continuing Resolution

October 1, 2016 Rachel Cole

On September 28, 2016, the U.S. Senate and, a few hours later, the House of Representatives passed a resolution that would continue the funding of the government through December 9, 2016 – narrowly missing the last day of this fiscal year, which ends on the September 30th.  Since Congress failed to pass the 12 individual […]

On August 5, 2016, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its “Monthly Budget Review for July 2016.”  The CBO increased its projection of fiscal year 2016 deficit by 10 percent, from $534 billion to $590 billion, in its review.  The non-partisan agency attributes the deficit increase to lower-than-expected revenues.  In addition to lower revenues, costs […]

IRS Undermines Congressional Budgeting

July 29, 2016 Rachel Cole

In a July 2016 report, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) could improve its budget data in its justifications to Congress.  The report found that the IRS, while it has taken steps to more effectively manage its budget, has not correlated its priorities to relevant appropriations accounts.  In its […]

Next on Hotel Hell: City of Baltimore

June 9, 2016 Alex Abrams

For eight consecutive years, the city-owned and operated Hilton Baltimore has lost money, $5.2 million in 2015. Baltimore’s economy has not been strong recently, and the riots following the Freddie Gray incident haven’t had a positive impact on the city’s tourist business.  However, the Hilton was losing money well before the recent troubles.  Instead of making $7 million a […]
