Internships
Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) offers a wide variety of opportunities to college students across the country. Unpaid internships are available on a year-round basis and can vary in length from a semester to a few weeks in duration. Interns can choose to work part-time or full time, as hours of work are extremely flexible.
Our daily work with Capitol Hill and the White House, as well as government agencies and other non-profit organizations, provides a close and invaluable look at how Washington works. Since CAGW maintains a small staff, interns gain hands-on experience in all aspects of CAGW's activities.
Many projects involve working closely with staff members, while others require a certain amount of independence. Interns are considered important members of our staff and actively participate in staff meetings and other events. While interns will also be required to perform clerical duties from time to time, much of the work will be substantive.
CAGW's internship program covers the following areas:
RESEARCH: Assist in formulating policy papers and collect data for original investigative studies. Research and write for CAGW's annual publications, which include the Congressional Pig Book, Prime Cuts, and special projects, including issue briefs, and policy papers. Interns will have the opportunity to initiate projects. Research internships are also available in specific areas, including healthcare and science, technology and telecommunications, federal regulations, and taxation.
COMMUNICATIONS/MEDIA: Assist CAGW's communications director with answering press and public information requests, conduct media outreach campaigns, assist with social media content, produce and distribute press releases, update press lists, maintain media database, and coordinate communications to radio talk show hosts, reporters, and columnists. Interns will also assist in research for special reports. They are also encouraged to write articles for Government WasteWatch eNews, CAGW's monthly membership publication and CAGW's staff blog, The WasteWatcher. Anyone with experience in communications and media is encouraged to apply.
LEGISLATIVE: Assist CAGW's policy staff with various aspects of the legislative process, including monitoring hearings; summarizing essential testimony and votes taken during committee meetings, tracking legislation and regulations concerning government waste issues, and researching and developing legislative summaries. Attend various coalition meetings with other organizations.
