(Washington, D.C.) – Thomas A. Schatz, president of Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW,) issued the following statement today in response to the announced resignation of Speaker-elect and CAGW Board of Governors member Rep. Bob Livingston (R-La.).

“I admire Bob’s courage in both admitting his human frailties and his willingness to take responsibility for his actions by resigning from the Congress.  However, I am deeply saddened by this drastic action.  He is a good friend to Citizens Against Government Waste, and we will sorely miss his leadership in the House.  He was an ally in the war on waste.  We remain fully supportive of him, and we know he will be equally successful in his future endeavors.

“Having said that, CAGW looks forward to working with future Speaker Denny Hastert (R-Ill.).  Rep. Hastert has a long record of working on behalf of the taxpayers, as evidenced by his excellent CAGW voting record.  Rep. Hastert is also the only member of the congressional leadership to sign the CAGW ‘Pledge of Integrity.’”

CAGW is a 600,000 nonpartisan, nonprofit organization with 6,000 members in the state of Louisiana.
