(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) President Tom Schatz released the following statement supporting Rep. Kevin Brady’s (R-Texas) Maximizing America’s Prosperity (MAP) Act, which takes realistic steps to overcome Washington’s spending addiction.

The statement reads:

“At a time when the nation’s debt has ballooned to more than $22.5 trillion, members of Congress should be looking for every viable way to slash wasteful programs and curtail superfluous spending. The MAP Act safeguards taxpayers against irresponsible increases in federal expenditures, encourages healthy budgeting, promotes transparent accounting practices, and provides a framework to keep lawmakers in check.  As Rep. Brady said, ‘It’s time to stop believing in the government-spending fairy.’ CCAGW thanks Rep. Brady for his continued leadership to bring wasteful spending under control and urges members of Congress to support the MAP Act.”

Specifically, the MAP Act would:

  • Impose caps on discretionary and mandatory spending as a percentage of potential GDP, similar to the successful “debt brake” used in Switzerland.
  • Allocate 1 percent of the budget annually to better prepare, plan, and pay for emergencies.
