(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) issued a statement of enthusiastic support for Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-Okla.) WasteBook 2013, which details 100 examples of the federal government’s unnecessary, duplicative and low-priority programs totaling $28 billion.

The expenditures include:

  • $321 million wasted by three federal agencies on duplicative information technology projects over the past several years;
  • $171.5 million in losses on loans to sugar producers who could not pay back the money they borrowed from the government;
  • $10.7 million for the Denali Commission, even after the agency’s inspector general determined that it should be shut down;
  • $3 million for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to study how Congress works;
  • $914,000 for the Popular Romance Project to promote romance novels;
  • $704,198 for gardening and landscaping services at the home of the U.S. Ambassador to NATO;
  • $415,000 to promote U.S. wine in China, a communist country to which the U.S. owes $1.2 trillion; and
  • $325,525 for a study that concluded wives should calm down quickly during marital spats.

“Sen. Coburn continues to be a strong ally of taxpayers by both identifying ways in which an alarming amount of government waste can be eliminated and also revealing how much Washington is out of touch with reality,” said CAGW President Tom Schatz.  “Waste Book 2013” successfully demonstrates that until members of Congress have the courage to cut specific programs, the nation’s fiscal well-being will continue to be at risk today, tomorrow, and for future generations.”

Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government.
