(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) named Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) our May 2020 Porkers of the Month for trying to trick Americans into thinking they are getting free money.
On April 14, 2020, Reps. Ryan and Khanna introduced H.R. 6496, the Emergency Money for People Act. The bill will hand out $2,000 each month to individual Americans for the next six months – but that money is already coming out of everyone’s pocket. Congress has already allocated $3 trillion to fight coronavirus, including wasteful spending unrelated to the pandemic. Rep. Ryan himself admitted that the new proposal would cost the government “in the trillions” more each month. The plan will clearly cost taxpayers more than it will save.
CAGW President Tom Schatz said, “Free money sounds good, but this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Rep. Ryan and Rep. Khanna are trying to trick taxpayers into thinking that the money they will receive will cost nothing, but it is really a massive handout coming out of everyone’s bank account. This “temporary” money will become permanent since the bill provides no incentive for Americans to get back to work. The country is $24 trillion in debt and this is no time to add trillions more. The two representatives think they have Americans’ best interests at heart, but the Emergency Money for People Act won’t help the economy and won’t help Americans go back to work, which everyone wants and needs.”
Citizens Against Government Waste is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in government. For more than two decades, Porker of the Month is a dubious honor given to lawmakers and government officials who have shown a blatant disregard for the interests of taxpayers.
