Scandal Raines Down on Fannie Mae

The unfolding accounting scandal at Fannie Mae has now led to the exodus of two high level executives, Chief Financial Officer Timothy Howard and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Frank Raines, as well as the dismissal of the company's accounting firm, KPMG. The company violated accounting standards, manipulated earnings to project a smooth image to Wall Street, and engaged in ???cookie jar??? accounting to trigger huge bonuses for company executives.

Pigs vs. the Troops

Congressional appropriators who have pillaged defense funds to finance unnecessary pork projects have adversely affected the ability of our troops to defend themselves. One defense analyst estimated that the fiscal 2005 Department of Defense (DOD) Appropriations Act contains $9 billion worth of pork. CAGW has pegged the figure closer to $12 billion.

Microsoft Gets Euro-Trashed

Last month a European court handed down a senseless decision that will have far-reaching, damaging consequences for prices and innovation in Europe and the U.S. Microsoft must comply with expensive antitrust penalties even though the original ruling against the company may be overturned. In addition to damaging Microsoft, the ruling hurts small software developers, discourages innovation worldwide, and does nothing to benefit consumers or taxpayers.

DoEd Offers Lesson in Propoganda

The Department of Education (DoEd) stooped to a new low by using taxpayer dollars to desecrate one of the most important clauses of the First Amendment: freedom of speech. In early January, USA Today revealed that DoEd paid Armstrong Williams, a nationally syndicated radio, television, and print personality, $241,000 to promote the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).
