A pencil pusher at the New York State Liquor Authority has sued the state of New York because she has not been given enough work to do. Pat Freund???an employee of the Liquor Authority for the last 25 years???is ???earning??? $100,000 a year for sitting at her desk, reading, and filling out crossword puzzles. Not content with idle work, Freund is seeking to reclaim responsibilities that were allegedly taken away from her after she criticized fellow employees for attending a prayer breakfast held by New York Governor George Pataki back in 2000.

GAO's Least Wanted

In February, 2004, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released its annual list of federal ???high-risk??? areas. GAO evaluated a wide variety of federal departments and agencies and found many programs chock full of waste, fraud and abuse.

Deficit Doldrums

College Loans Make Taxpayers Groan

This year Congress will reauthorize the Higher Education Act, a 1965 law that was enacted for three primary reasons: Provide scholarships and guarantee low-interest student loans to high school graduates; assist students in finishing high school and entering post-secondary institutions; and improve kindergarten through 12th grade teacher training at post-secondary schools.
