(Washington, D.C.) — Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) today applauds the President’s Commission on the United States Postal Service for its recommendations that eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in the United States Postal Service (USPS). The Commission held a press conference today to highlight some of its recommendations that it will be including in its final report that it will issued by the end of this month.
“Just because it has a legalized monopoly over the mail system, the USPS feels like it is fine to maintain their culture of inefficiency and insolvency, and waste tax dollars,” CAGW Special Projects Director Leslie Paige. “If most businesses functioned like the USPS, they would fail miserably.”
By increasing oversight and implementing some basic business practices, members of the Commission felt confident that the USPS could be brought out of the dark depths of waste and into the beautiful world financial solvency. Some of the recommendations are as follows:
● The current Board of Governors should be transformed into a corporate-style Board of Directors with broad authority to oversee USPS operations;
● The transformation of the Postal Rate Commission Postal into a new Postal Regulatory Board which will have the power to regulate rates for non-competitive products, clarify and refine the scope of the postal monopoly, ensure financial transparency, and review and investigate complaints from those who believe the USPS has exceeded its authority;
● The current rate-setting process should be replaced by “an incentive-based rate-setting methodology” overseen by the Postal Regulatory Board.”
“Obviously, someone needs to be checking in more closely on the workings of the USPS,” said Paige. “Hopefully, these recommendations, when enforced, will create the type of oversight needed to make the USPS a less wasteful and abusive organization.”
