(Washington, D.C.) – Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW), the nation’s premiere taxpayer watchdog, in conjunction with the Tennessee Center for Policy Research (TCPR), Tennessee’s free market think tank, today unveiled the 2007 Tennessee Pork Report: State Government Gone Hog Wild. This is the second year in a row the groups collaborated to create the definitive guide for reducing waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement in the Tennessee state government.
The Tennessee Pork Report combines elements of two perennial CAGW publications, the Congressional Pig Book and Prime Cuts, with TCPR’s knowledge of the Tennessee state budget. The report exposes many areas in the state budget where wasteful spending can be eliminated, providing a valuable resource to legislators and taxpayers.
The Pork Report outlines more than $125 million in waste, fraud and abuse, including:
- $1,191,342 to subsidize state-owned golf courses;
- $1 million to give state workers free bus rides to work;
- $352,210 for an overstock of computers and printers in the Department of Labor and Workforce Development;
- $154,000 for fairs and livestock shows;
- $94,313 spent in violation of state spending rules on Department of Health credit cards;
- $21,279 for new carpet in the office of the Speaker of the House; and
- $15,205 for unused phone lines in Hamilton County.
The report is now available online at www.cagw.org and www.tennesseepolicy.org. For answers to further questions, to schedule an interview, or to order a hard copy, please contact Alexa Moutevelis (202-467-5318, amoutevelis@cagw.org) or Nicole Williams (615-383-6431, editor@tennesseepolicy.org).
