(Washington, D.C.) – Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) President Tom Schatz issued the following statement in support of the outline for tax reform released by Congress and the Trump administration on July 27, 2017:

“CAGW is fully supportive of the principles of pro-growth tax reform outlined in the joint statement from House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady (R-Texas).  The last comprehensive tax reform legislation was passed in 1986.  It is long past time to make taxes lower, fairer, and simpler.  The proposal from Congress and the Trump administration will create jobs, spur investment, and cut red tape.

The tax code is broken, and the changes being contemplated by Congress and the White House will go a long way toward fixing many problems.  The American people deserve to have a tax system that will be so simple that as many people as possible can fill out their taxes on a postcard.

CAGW looks forward to working with the tax-writing committees in the House and Senate to provide the lowest possible rates for individuals and businesses in the legislation.  We urge Congress to take advantage of this monumental opportunity to provide the most comprehensive tax reform possible, and send a bill to President Trump for his signature before the end of this year.”
