BESTEA 1998 Pork Analysis

Appalachian Transportation Institute.  $12 million to establish an Appalachian Transportation Institute at Marshall University.  Located in Huntington, the district of Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.).

Cuyahoga River Bridge.  Authorizes the use of Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program funds for the construction of a new bridge over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, Ohio.  Located in district of Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio).

Gettysburg Train Station.  $800,000 for the restoration of the Gettysburg, Pa., train station. The Gettysburg train station is a privately owned facility that operates an excursion train along a short stretch of rail near the Gettysburg National Military Park.  Located in district of Rep. Bill Goodling (R-Pa.).

Intelligent Transportation Systems Institute.  $12 million for the Intelligent Transportation Systems Institute at the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis.  Located in the district of Rep. Martin Sabo (D-Minn.).

Intercity Bus Museum.  Authorizes the use of Transportation Enhancement Activity Funds to establish an intercity bus history museum in Hibbing, Minn.  Located in the district of Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.).

National Scenic Byways Center.  $4.5 million to establish a center to develop and implement communications systems for the support of the $180 million National Scenic Byways Program.  Located in district of Rep. James Oberstar (D-Minn.).

 

New River Parkway Visitors Center.  $12.4 million (total for fiscal years l998-2000) shall be allocated from the Federal Lands Highways Program (Parkways and Park Highways – 4.6 percent of that program’s three-year funding) to the Secretary of the Interior for the planning, design, and construction of a visitors center.  There are five existing National Park Service Visitor Centers within 25 miles of the proposed location.  Located in the district of Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.).

Northeast Ohio Transportation History Museum.  Authorizes the use of Transportation Enhancement Activity Funds to establish a museum devoted to the history of transportation and industry in Northeast Ohio and the United States.  Located in the district of Rep. Steven LaTourette (R-Ohio).

Parthenon Building Art Museum.  The Parthenon is an art museum that was built in 1897 as a replica of the ancient Greek temple in Athens as part of Tennessee's Centennial Exposition.  Parthenon was renovated in 1988 at a cost of $2 million with “state-of-the-art galleries, a gift shop, and office space in the basement.”  Located in the district of Rep. Bob Clement (D-Tenn.).

Princeton Rail History Museum.  Authorizes the use of Transportation Enhancement Activity Funds to establish a rail history museum.  Located in the district of Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.).

Smithsonian Institution Transportation Program.  $30 million for the Smithsonian Institution to complete the transfer of aviation and space artifacts to the new National Air and Space Museum facility in Dulles, Va. and to renovate the transportation halls of the National Museum of American History (mostly costs associated with moving the locomotives).  Dulles is located in the district of Frank Wolf (R-Va.).

Miscellaneous Pork Programs.

  • $210 million for Welfare to Work Pilot Grants.
  • $120 million for defense highways outside the United States.
  • $30 million for low-speed magnetic levitation (mag-lev) research.
  • $12 million for Intelligent Transportation Systems research for Milwaukee, Chicago, and Gary, Indiana.
  • $1.5 million to study truck parking facilities.
  • $1 million for a documentary about transportation.
  • $500,000 to study improved access to the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
