SACRAMENTO – On Thursday, September 18, 2008, the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Foundation (HJTF) and Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) will jointly release the 2008 California Piglet Book, focusing on government waste, fraud and abuse in transportation. This year’s California Piglet Book will contain the executive summary and conclusion of a just-completed study of the plan for a high-speed rail line between the Bay Area and Burbank. The full-study will be available for viewing at www.reasonfoundation.org immediately following the press conference. Sponsored jointly by CAGW, HJTF, and the Reason Foundation, and authored by transportation experts Wendell Cox and Joseph Vranich, The California High Speed Rail Proposal: A Due Diligence Report challengers the many assumptions advanced by the proponents of this massive project. The report shows that the actual cost to taxpayers of the bullet train plan, which will appear as Proposition 1A on the November ballot, could be tens of billions of dollars more than claimed by the promoters.
